Snow Depth and Groomed Trail Conditions
Lake Vermilion - Soudan Underground Mine State Park
Low snow conditions persist throughout our trail system from Ely to Side Lake to International Falls. Some bits of trail have been groomed and/or rolled, and all the swamps that need to be packed to allow ice to freeze thicker have been packed. Despite that, snow depth remains too thin for wholesale grooming, and uplands and swamps remain rough with few exceptions. If you are riding the trails, use caution and remain alert for rocks, holes, and generally rough trail conditions. Continue to monitor conditions online, as they may change rapidly if we get snowfall: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html

The park has six miles of snowmobile trail that connects from the Taconite State Trail to the Lake Vermilion ice trail. The ride takes you through old growth pines and young aspen forests with large wetland complexes to view along the way.
You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota's state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as skiing or snowmobiling.
