In 1951, a small group of Minnesota conservationists launched the “Save the Minnesota Wetlands” program with an audacious goal: permanently protect 250,000 acres of land and preserve it for wildlife habitat. That vision became Minnesota’s Wildlife Management Area (WMA) system, which today encompasses more than 1,500 areas and 1.4 million acres. It stands as a testament to generations of DNR staff, conservation partners, hunters, and trappers who helped build this legacy.The WMA photo contest invites Minnesotans to celebrate not just the places we’ve protected, but the connection we all share with them. By sharing your photos, you help highlight the beauty, diversity, and purpose of these lands, reminding others why they matter and why this legacy must endure. Whether it’s a snapshot of wildlife, a meaningful family tradition, a successful day afield, or a favorite quiet corner of a WMA, your images help bring the story of 75 years of conservation to life and inspire future generations to appreciate and protect these special places.
