Scoping period open through Nov. 18
During this time, people can share ideas, concerns, and opportunities related to habitat management, recreational opportunities, and natural resource conservation on WMAs and AMAs.
Give your inputThe Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife is coordinating a planning effort to create a statewide management framework for Minnesota’s system of Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Aquatic Management Areas (AMAs).
The WMA/AMA system planning project developed out of a recognized need for consistent, comprehensive, long-term management planning for the WMA/AMA system, paired with the desire for increased partner input and local and statewide public involvement in WMA/AMA management planning efforts. Although we recently updated management plans for seven of our largest major unit WMAs, this project will focus on the remainder of Minnesota’s approximately 1,500 WMAs and 700 AMAs.
The four ecological provinces can be viewed on the map. The public is welcome to comment on as many provinces as they'd like.

The project is divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 focuses on the development of an overarching statewide WMA/AMA system plan.
- Phase 2 focuses on the development of four landscape-level management plans that articulate the desired management goals for the WMA and AMA units found with each of the state’s four ecological provinces.
- Phase 3 will include the creation of templates for management plans for individual units or units grouped by operational area.
Currently, we have a working draft of the Phase 1 statewide plan, and we are just beginning the planning processes for the four landscape-level plans.
