Counties with shotgun ordinances

The Minnesota Legislature repealed the shotgun zone. Counties in the former shotgun zone have the option of passing an ordinance to remain shotgun-only.

Except in counties that pass a shotgun-only ordinance, firearms deer hunters will be able to use all legal shotguns, handguns and rifles throughout the state where deer hunting is allowed. This change will be in effect for the 2026 firearms deer season.

The table below provides a list of of counties that have notified the state that they have passed shotgun‑only ordinances.

Please check with your local county where you intend to hunt to ensure you have the most current information.
