Big water, big fish
Mille Lacs Lake's big waters are producing big smallmouth bass. Just ask anglers who have learned when, where and how to land these prized red-eyed bronze-backed giants.
Land your lunker
With the right equipment and know-how, you can fish deeper out on the big lake. But the rocky shorlines and bays of the southern shores around Isle, Father Hennepin State Park and Wahkon are ideal places to try more conventional smallmouth tactics.
We're keeping track
DNR is doing fieldwork this spring and summer to conduct a smallmouth bass population estimate.
Studies such as this, which we'll soon be documenting on the At Work For You page, are important because they ensure that smallmouth bass harvest policies are safe and sustainable.
DNR wants to be sure that increasing angler attention and fishing effort directed at smallmouth bass are factored in so harvest rates don't negatively impact the quality size available to catch-and-release bass anglers.
Angler of the Year returns
The world's top 50 bass anglers will again compete on Mille Lacs for $1 million in payouts from Thursday, Sept. 14, through Sunday, Sept. 17, during the Toyota Angler Of The Year Championship on Mille Lacs Lake.Bloomington angler beats the best on Lake Mille Lacs
