DNR invites public input on Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail extension

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites the public to an open house to review and comment on the Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail Master Plan Amendment, which proposes a 6-mile trail extension from Harmony to the Iowa border and Niagara Cave, located in Fillmore County.


More counties under burning restrictions to help prevent wildfires

To help ensure public safety and protect natural resources, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is expanding burning restrictions. Effective 12:01 a.m., July 27, areas within state jurisdiction in Aitkin, Becker, Benton, Carlton, Clearwater, Mahnomen and Stearns counties are included in burning restrictions already in place for the eastern portion of Roseau County and all of Beltrami, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Lake, Morrison, St. Louis, Todd and Wadena counties.


Hunters can begin planning with the 2021 deer hunting season details

With the release of the online version of the 2021 Minnesota Hunting and Trapping Regulations handbook, hunters can read up on what’s new to prepare for this year’s deer hunting season. The handbook is now available on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ deer hunting webpage. Printed copies of the handbook will be delivered to hunting license vendors the first week of August.


Counts show significant decline in sharp-tailed grouse in east-central Minnesota

Minnesota’s sharp-tailed grouse population has declined significantly in the east-central portion of the state, according to spring population counts conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and cooperators who help count the birds.


Ruffed grouse counts down from last year

Minnesota’s ruffed grouse spring population counts are down from last year as expected during the declining phase of the species’ 10-year cycle — a predictable pattern recorded for 72 years. Although peaks vary from eight to 11 years apart, the most recent peak in the cycle occurred in 2017.

Fishing regulations now available in Hmong, Karen, Somali and Spanish

People who speak Hmong, Karen, Somali or Spanish now can read in their language how to legally fish in Minnesota. The Department of Natural Resources has translated the state’s fishing regulations into four languages. Previously, they had been available only in English.
