Boat safe, boat sober

The state’s waterways will be busy during the long Fourth of July weekend. Ensure your safety on the water by wearing a life jacket, driving without distractions, and staying sober. Increased enforcement will be on the water as part of Operation Dry Water, which is aimed at removing from the water people who are operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

New boater education requirements

A new law designed to make boating safer goes into effect July 1, 2025, and will require more people to complete boater education before operating a motorboat or personal watercraft. See the “New boater education law” webpage for details about which watercraft operators will need an operator’s permit.
